Vitalik Buterin says Layer 2s that copy Ethereum add little value, pushing the ecosystem toward stronger innovation and differentiation.
Author: Arushi Garg
21 April, 2026: Vitalik Buterin said that Layer 2 solutions which simply copy Ethereum’s design and offer only marginally cheaper or faster transactions “make no sense.” Speaking at the 4th Hong Kong Web3 Festival on April 20, 2026, he argued that Ethereum Layer 1 has made significant scaling progress. As a result, Layer 2s must now deliver genuine innovation rather than act as generic copies. He emphasized that the most valuable L2s should focus on unique features such as specialized execution, privacy, or application specific optimizations.

@WuBlockchain @VitalikButerin Vitalik’s point on compute scaling is critical. Moving beyond simple L2 clones to specialized off-chain execution is exactly where the real efficiency gains for decentralized AI agent networks will come from.

@WuBlockchain @VitalikButerin Damn right. Cloning Ethereum just to make it more centralized is pointless. Build what apps actually need.

@WuBlockchain @VitalikButerin I guess L2s have flooded the market because L1 gas fees are so high to begin with. ETH keeps increasing in supply, its value keeps falling, and the operators keep selling—there’s nothing good about it. This pattern where L2 operators win and holders lose is here to stay.

Vitalik made these comments during a public talk at the Hong Kong Web3 Festival. (Add source link here: official event page, video, or transcript) He said, “Layer 2s that just copy Ethereum and offer slightly cheaper or faster transactions make no sense.”
He also criticized the earlier idea of L2s acting as simple “branded shards” for scaling Ethereum. He argued this approach is less relevant today. Ethereum has already improved its base layer performance. Instead, he stressed that valuable L2s should focus on unique off chain components. These include privacy features, specialized execution environments, and application specific designs that Ethereum cannot easily support.
How Vitalik distinguishes generic Ethereum copycat L2s from genuinely valuable long-term rollup designs
Vitalik was an early advocate of the rollup centric roadmap. This approach encouraged many teams to build Ethereum compatible Layer 2s. He now suggests that simply replicating Ethereum at Layer 2 is no longer enough. This reflects changes in Ethereum’s base layer capabilities rather than a complete shift in direction.
During the same talk, he highlighted the importance of PeerDAS and improved data availability. These upgrades will shape how L2s scale in the future. He added that success will depend less on transaction speed. Instead, it will depend on building specialized environments such as privacy focused or application specific chains. These systems should complement Ethereum rather than compete with it.
Vitalik’s comments highlight growing pressure on Layer 2 projects to move beyond simple scaling solutions. The next phase of Ethereum’s ecosystem will likely favor L2s that introduce new capabilities rather than replicate existing ones.
