The owner goes by @cprkrn on X. He lost access in 2015 after changing his Bitcoin Core wallet password while intoxicated.
Over the next 11 years, he tried roughly 7 trillion password guesses. These attempts included manual efforts and paid recovery services. None of them worked.
Then on May 13, 2026, the full 5 BTC balance was swept from the dormant wallet. On-chain records confirm the wallet had not moved since April 2015.
The recovery hinged on two key discoveries. First, the owner recently found an old “pneumonic” (his spelling of mnemonic). It turned out to be the original password from before the 2015 change.
That alone was not enough, because the wallet.dat file on his computer used the newer, forgotten password. So as a last resort, he uploaded his entire college computer backup into Claude.
The AI then parsed thousands of unstructured files. It identified an older wallet.dat that predated the password change. The original password successfully decrypted this older file, granting access to the private keys.
According to @cprkrn, Claude also helped debug usage of btcrecover. That is an open-source wallet recovery tool.
Claude did not crack encryption or brute-force a password. Instead, it performed forensic file triage across a large, unstructured archive.
A wallet.dat file is the encrypted database Bitcoin Core uses to store private keys. Older wallets relied on a simple passphrase for encryption. This was before the BIP-39 seed phrase standard.
Because an older copy of the file existed, encrypted with the original password, it still held the same keys. Once Claude located the right file, the process was straightforward.
Key milestones in the Claude-Assisted 5 BTC Wallet Recovery
The Bitcoin Core wallet is created during college years, eventually receiving its full 5 BTC balance in April 2015.
After changing the wallet password while intoxicated, the owner immediately forgets the new passphrase and permanently locks himself out.
Manual recovery efforts, paid services, and trillions of password guesses fail to unlock the wallet over nearly a decade.
The owner unexpectedly finds an old pre-2015 password phrase and uploads archived college files into Claude AI as a final recovery attempt.
Claude identifies an untouched older wallet.dat file buried inside thousands of archived college documents and assists with recovery tooling.
Using the recovered mnemonic and btcrecover debugging assistance from Claude, the owner finally regains access to the private keys.
The recovered funds are moved on-chain into a fresh address controlled by the owner with no additional splitting or transfers afterward.
The owner publicly shares the recovery thread on X, quickly drawing millions of views and widespread discussion about AI-assisted crypto recovery.
“HOLY FUCKING SHIT OMG CLAUDE JUST CRACKED THIS SHIT, THANK YOU @AnthropicAI THANK YOU @DarioAmodei NAMING MY KID AFTER YOU,” @cprkrn posted on X on May 13.
In a follow-up thread, he explained the full timeline. He said he tried “like 7 trillion passwords” before finding the old mnemonic.
The story then spread quickly across X. Prominent crypto figures including nic_carter, Laura Shin, and Udi Wertheimer amplified it. Discussion also appeared on Reddit and Hacker News.
The wallet address 14VJySbsKraEJbtwk9ivnr1fXs6QuofuE6 received 5 BTC in April 2015. Blockchain explorers confirm it sat untouched for over 11 years.
@cprkrn also posted about the same dormant address in 2023. That establishes a prior public claim of ownership. No one has challenged the on-chain evidence.
The recovery also raises important security questions. Uploading a wallet.dat file to any cloud AI service means the provider holds a copy. Any keys extracted during the session also remain in logs.
“Claude has the keys, Anthropic has them in its logs,” one X user wrote in response. Anthropic has not issued any statement about the incident.
In addition, the flipside concern is significant. If AI can recover wallets from old backups, then the same capability could scan leaked archives. Security researchers note this creates a new attack vector.
An estimated 20% of all Bitcoin is considered permanently lost. That amounts to roughly 3.7 to 4 million BTC.
Famous cases include Stefan Thomas, who holds 7,002 BTC behind an IronKey device. He has only two password guesses remaining. James Howells has fought for years to excavate a Welsh landfill containing 8,000 BTC.
This Claude AI Bitcoin recovery adds a new chapter to those stories. AI-assisted file analysis could help some owners recover forgotten wallets. Specifically, those with old backups that contain earlier encrypted files.
Still, this case required very specific conditions. The owner needed an older wallet.dat from before the password change. He also needed the rediscovered original password. Most lost Bitcoin involves destroyed keys or hardware, where AI cannot help.
No major outlet has reported on this Claude AI Bitcoin recovery yet. The story broke less than three hours before this article. BTC price showed no measurable reaction on May 13.
The dominant social media narrative frames this as a breakthrough. A secondary narrative warns about privacy and security risks of uploading financial data to cloud AI.
For Bitcoin holders with old, forgotten wallets, the lesson is clear. AI tools can now perform forensic file archaeology in minutes. Whether that is a net positive depends on who is uploading the files.
