Explore x402 batch settlement Solana as BlockRun adopts PayAI payment channels to cut USDC transaction fees and speed up AI agent payments.
Author: Kritika Gupta
7th October 2026- Solana’s official account said on Wednesday that x402 batch payments are now live on its network. The post, published at 03:45 UTC on 7 October, credited PayAI Network as the facilitator and BlockRun AI as the first production user. The announcement amplified news that broke hours earlier. BlockRun said at 01:59 UTC that it had shipped batch x402 payments on Solana. The scheme itself, however, launched a week before as a public preview on 30 September.

@solana @x402 @PayAINetwork @BlockRunAI Opening a channel once and settling once is the part that makes agent payments actually viable. Curious what the dispute window looks like if an agent goes rogue mid-channel.

@solana @x402 @PayAINetwork @BlockRunAI It's basically a bar tab for AI agents. Open it, rack up the calls and settle once at the end, which makes a lot more sense than a separate transaction for every single request.

@solana @x402 @PayAINetwork @BlockRunAI One settle, N authorizations: the transfer lands onchain, but the receipt set (which resource, which price, which nonce) stays in the channel. Anyone reading only the settle tx can no longer prove a specific request was paid, which is the property x402 is bought for. Fix: anchor

High attention and emotional sentiment detected.
The feature is the x402 scheme called batch-settlement, running on Solana mainnet. PayAI facilitates it, and it is built on Solana Foundation’s payment-channels program.
So the 7 October posts mark a shift from preview to a named production user, not a first launch. PayAI opened the public preview on 30 September. Solana Compass, the only outlet with a detailed write-up, dated that preview to the same day.
On Wednesday, BlockRun said it had moved the feature into production. According to Solana’s post, BlockRun routes agents to more than 113 models through one endpoint and charges per call. The official account then amplified the claim to its audience.
Standard x402 ties one HTTP request to one on-chain stablecoin transfer. As a result, every tiny call pays a network fee and waits for settlement. For AI agents making millions of calls, that cost adds up fast.
A payment channel flips the model. First, the agent deposits USDC once into a program-owned account. After that, each call carries a signed voucher stating the new cumulative total owed.
The merchant checks the signature off-chain and serves the request immediately. Later, the merchant redeems the running total in a single on-chain claim. In short, many payments collapse into one settlement.
PayAI offers a simple illustration. A million payments of $0.001 each can settle on-chain as one $1,000 claim. That design is why x402 batch payments matter for agent workloads built on tiny, frequent charges.
From x402’s launch to Solana batch settlement
Coinbase introduces an open protocol that lets clients pay for HTTP resources with stablecoins.
The update expands support across chains, including Solana, ahead of the later batch-settlement rollout.
BlockRun adds per-call USDC payments through PayAI’s Solana facilitator. At this stage, each payment settles individually.
PayAI opens a public preview on Solana mainnet. Agents fund reusable USDC channels and sign cumulative vouchers for subsequent payments.
BlockRun announces its rollout at 01:59 UTC. Solana’s official account amplifies the news at 03:45 UTC. PayAI’s documentation still labels the service a public preview.
Watch for additional integrations, sustained payment-channel usage, and independent verification of the claimed fee and latency savings.
PayAI says BlockRun will save more than $20,000 per month in network fees. The company also claims the setup cuts latency by about 10 times. Solana repeated both figures in its thread.
For context, PayAI said BlockRun previously settled 18.5 million payments in 30 days. That volume cost roughly $18,400 in network fees under the old per-payment model.
Still, these numbers are estimates from PayAI and Solana, not an independent audit. The 18.5 million figure also reflects prior per-payment volume, not batch volume. Readers should treat the savings as projected, not verified.
Standard onchain payment vs. x402 batched payment channel
Solana and BlockRun describe the feature as live and in production. PayAI’s own documentation, meanwhile, still labels it a public preview with hard caps.
According to those docs, the preview runs on USDC on Solana mainnet only. Deposits range from 0.01 to 100 USDC. PayAI sponsors 1,000 channels across the whole service, with 10 channels per merchant.
There is another gap worth noting. On 4 October, a PayAI recap still listed BlockRun onboarding under future work. Three days later, the posts said it had shipped. No changelog explains the jump.
One more distinction matters for accuracy. This is PayAI’s facilitator, not Coinbase’s. As of its 1 October FAQ, Coinbase’s CDP facilitator still lists batch-settlement as EVM-only.
x402 is an open protocol from Coinbase that revives the unused HTTP 402 status code. It lets a client, human or agent, pay for a web resource with stablecoins and no account. Coinbase launched it in May 2025 and contributed it to the Linux Foundation in July 2026.
Headline volume numbers, however, conflict by orders of magnitude. The x402 Solana account cited about $50 billion in volume. Visa figures reported by The Block put x402 at just $7.5 million over six months.
Blockchain analytics firm Bitquery adds more doubt. It argued that x402 moved $2.6 billion in a month, but that almost none of it came from AI agents. Clearly, these measurements are not counting the same thing.
Security researchers have also flagged risks. A USENIX Security 2026 paper found rule violations in all 15 major x402 facilitators it tested. The channel design itself carries a risk, since a server-signed mode could let an operator claim an unspent deposit.
The next test is recurring demand, not launch-week attention. Replies to the Solana post leaned mildly bullish, yet several noted the feature is not a SOL trade. Indeed, SOL showed no visible price spike, closing near $118.59 on 7 October.
For now, the real signal is that a named user moved x402 batch payments into production on Solana. Whether more apps open channels past the 1,000-channel cap will show if the model scales. Until then, the throughput claims remain unverified.
