The SUI token has seen a significant surge in price, climbing above $4.25 as the highly anticipated token unlock approaches on August 1, 2025. This unlock, involving approximately 44 million SUI tokens valued at around $241 million, could have a notable impact on the market. With the release of these tokens, attention is now on the potential consequences for the price of the token and the broader market.
On August 1, 2025, the Sui blockchain will unlock 44 million SUI tokens, representing 1.27% of the circulating supply. These tokens will be distributed to various stakeholders, including early contributors, Series A and B investors, and community reserves. This unlock will increase the overall circulating supply, which could create market volatility.
Token unlocks have historically led to fluctuations in price. The sudden increase in circulating supply can create selling pressure, which may push prices down. For example, in January 2025, a similar unlock saw the price of drop by 50%. However, factors like strong ecosystem growth and increased interest in decentralized finance (DeFi) and NFTs could help absorb the new supply and support the price.
Market sentiment remains mixed. Some anticipate a “sell the news” event, where investors sell after the unlock is executed. Others are optimistic about the long-term outlook, citing the growth of Sui’s ecosystem and its Total Value Locked (TVL). In April 2025, Sui’s TVL reached $1.73 billion, demonstrating healthy growth despite market volatility.
SUI’s past unlocks have shown a pattern of volatility. The December 2024, January 2025, and February 2025 unlocks led to initial price drops, followed by recoveries. Notably, the May 2025 unlock of 74 million tokens had a major impact, with the price increasing after the event. These patterns suggest that while there may be short-term price movements, the token’s long-term outlook remains positive.
Over the past year, the SUI token has experienced impressive growth, as shown in the price chart above. It rose from around $1.15 in July 2024 to over $4.25 in July 2025. This increase reflects a combination of factors, including rising institutional adoption and investor optimism surrounding the upcoming unlock. This growth highlights the strength of the SUI token’s fundamentals.
With the unlock approaching, it’s uncertain how the market will react. The key question is whether the market can absorb the influx of new tokens without substantial price fluctuations. Investors should closely monitor any official updates and market developments leading up to the unlock.
