Storj Labs bankruptcy filing begins a Chapter 11 restructuring as services continue and token holders await possible equity terms.

27th July 2026- Storj Labs, the company behind decentralized cloud storage network Storj, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on July 26, 2026, in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of West Virginia. The company said the restructuring will address legacy liabilities while allowing services and the network to continue normally.
Management views the filing as a financial reset rather than a shutdown. Storj plans to propose a reorganization that could divide ownership among management, investors, and STORJ token holders. However, the bankruptcy court must approve any plan, and creditors will retain priority over token holders.
High Signal Summary For A Quick Glance
High attention and emotional sentiment detected.
Storj launched in 2014 as a decentralized alternative to traditional cloud storage providers. The platform allows users to rent unused hard-drive capacity for distributed storage.
Public figures show Storj raised about $5 million through equity and grants. It later raised roughly $30 million through its May 2017 STORJ token sale, bringing total disclosed capital near $35 million.
Inveniam Capital Partners acquired Storj in October 2025 through a reverse triangular merger. Storj retained its leadership and operations. Before the filing, the company reported a sevenfold increase in annual recurring revenue during 2024.
Nevertheless, management said legacy obligations continued to restrict the business. Storj responded by reducing costs, selling non-core assets, and narrowing its focus. This filing marks its first bankruptcy restructuring.
Meanwhile, the STORJ token fell about 14% to 17% after the announcement and traded near $0.06. Some holders questioned whether token ownership could convert into equity. Others viewed Chapter 11 as structured debt cleanup that could preserve the network.
Storj said customers and node operators should see no immediate disruption. The company plans to continue meeting operational obligations under court supervision, while Inveniam supports the restructuring.
Importantly, the filing does not change STORJ token utility inside the network. However, investors still face execution risk. Service continuity depends on liquidity, court approval, customer retention, and Storjās ability to complete a viable reorganization.
Management plans to propose a mechanism that could give eligible STORJ holders equity exposure in the reorganized company. The company has invited holders to organize, attend an upcoming AMA, and use dedicated communication channels.
Still, token holders should not treat the proposal as guaranteed compensation. The court must respect creditor claims, securities laws, and stakeholder priorities before approving any equity distribution. Therefore, eligibility, conversion terms, dilution, and timing remain uncertain.

The filing highlights a broader crypto issue: token ownership does not automatically provide shareholder rights. Even when a project uses decentralized infrastructure, its operating company may still carry conventional debt and bankruptcy risk.
For Storj, Chapter 11 may protect operations while management restructures liabilities. However, the long-term outcome depends on revenue growth, network demand, court negotiations, and the final treatment of creditors and token holders. In the near term, users may see operational continuity, but investors should expect legal uncertainty and token volatility.
