7th December 2025 – Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang made headlines on December 6, 2025, for his remarks on Bitcoin’s energy usage. In a recent interview, he described Bitcoin mining as a way to convert surplus energy into digital currency. He argued that this process enables energy to be stored and transferred globally, without the need for physical infrastructure.
Huang explained that Bitcoin takes excess energy and turns it into money. According to him, that money can then move across borders, making energy portable and globally usable. His comments contrast with the usual criticism of Bitcoin’s high electricity consumption.
He emphasized that Bitcoin mining does not just consume energy. Instead, it transforms wasted or underutilized energy into secure value. That value can then travel anywhere in the world.
The interview focused largely on energy constraints caused by the growth of AI. Huang said the biggest challenge for AI is not chips, but energy. He mentioned the need for nuclear solutions like small modular reactors to power future data centers.
This framing placed Bitcoin alongside AI as part of a larger conversation on energy efficiency and future infrastructure. Huang praised Bitcoin’s use of energy that might otherwise go to waste, such as flared gas or surplus renewable output.
Bitcoin mining uses an estimated 150–200 TWh per year. Critics call this unsustainable. But Huang’s view supports an alternative argument. Many miners already operate in regions with excess power, like Texas or Iceland. There, Bitcoin helps monetize energy that has no other immediate use.
This is not a new argument within the Bitcoin community. However, it gains new weight coming from the head of Nvidia, a company deeply tied to both AI and early crypto mining.
Nvidia does not mine Bitcoin. It does not sell dedicated mining chips anymore either. Huang’s remarks were conceptual. They tied into broader themes around digital transformation, energy economics, and global innovation.
However, Nvidia remains central to the computing infrastructure behind both AI and Web3. The idea that Bitcoin could serve as a vehicle for energy monetization adds another layer to that conversation.
Huang’s support offers a rare corporate endorsement of Bitcoin’s role in global energy dynamics. Rather than focus on carbon emissions, he chose to highlight energy efficiency and utility. His view presents Bitcoin as a tool, not a threat — one that can solve real-world energy problems while enabling decentralized value transfer.
