Steady attention without excessive speculation.
The product is not a fresh launch. Instead, Grayscale converted its long-running Zcash Trust into a spot exchange-traded product with continuous creation and redemption. The firm confirmed the debut in a press release on 25 August.
The fund holds actual ZEC in custody, so shares track the token’s price minus fees. According to the issuer, non-GAAP assets stood at roughly $313.5 million as of 24 August. Holdings were about 387,212 ZEC on the same date.
Coinbase Custody Trust Company acts as custodian. The Bank of New York Mellon serves as transfer agent and administrator. Jane Street Capital and Virtu Americas are the authorized participants, and they create and redeem large share blocks.
That structure matters for pricing. Because authorized participants can arbitrage the fund, the share price should track net asset value more closely. As a result, the wide premiums and discounts of the old OTC trust should narrow over time.
The trust itself is not new. Grayscale formed it in 2017, and it traded on OTCQX under the same ZCSH ticker from 2021. The uplisting to NYSE Arca then followed a run of S-3 amendments and a name change to “The Zcash ETF” filed on 24 August.
The Zcash ETF charges a 2.50% annual sponsor fee, paid in ZEC. By comparison, most spot Bitcoin ETFs charge under 0.5%. So the cost sits well above the market standard.
Grayscale addressed that gap directly. For the first year, the firm intends to route 100% of the management fee toward marketing, education, and awareness for Zcash and ZCSH. The sponsor entity is Grayscale Investments Sponsors, LLC, an affiliate of Digital Currency Group.
Steve Vanourny, Grayscale’s Head of Index, framed the launch around demand for privacy. “As AI reshapes how financial activity can be monitored, we believe demand for genuine financial privacy will only grow,” he said in the official release.
Key milestones in the Grayscale Zcash Trust’s conversion into the ZCSH ETF
Grayscale introduces the trust through a private placement, giving accredited investors exposure to ZEC.
Shares of the Grayscale Zcash Trust begin trading publicly on OTCQX under the ticker ZCSH.
Grayscale advances its SEC registration process to convert the closed-end trust into a spot Zcash ETF.
Grayscale submits another amended registration statement with updated terms and disclosures for ZCSH.
A fifth amendment and Form 8-K identify August 25 as the anticipated NYSE Arca listing date, subject to approval.
The trust is renamed The Zcash ETF as Grayscale completes its final prospectus and listing preparations.
The Grayscale Zcash ETF makes its first trade on NYSE Arca, offering direct spot exposure to ZEC.
Key signals include trading volume, net inflows, AUM growth, NAV tracking, premium or discount levels and potential in-kind redemptions.
Zcash launched in 2016 as a Bitcoin-style coin with optional privacy. Users can send transparent transactions or shielded ones that hide the sender, receiver, and amount. Viewing keys then allow selective disclosure to auditors or regulators.
Privacy features have long drawn scrutiny. Exchanges delisted some privacy coins in past years, and EU anti-money-laundering rules are phasing in restrictions toward 2027. Still, Zcash offers optional privacy rather than mandatory privacy, which Grayscale positions as more compliance-friendly.
A regulated wrapper adds transparent custody and KYC’d participants. Therefore the ZCSH structure gives institutions a familiar path to ZEC exposure without wallets or private keys. It also tests how far regulators will tolerate privacy assets in mainstream products.
The token also shares Bitcoin’s core economics. It uses proof-of-work and caps supply at 21 million coins, with about 16.9 million now in circulation. Network upgrades such as Sapling and Orchard also improved the efficiency of its zero-knowledge proofs.
The token rallied hard before the debut. Reports cited gains of roughly 45% to 70% over the prior week, with prices near multi-year highs around 23 and 24 August. On 25 August, ZEC traded in the $810 to $840 range, according to market data on CoinGecko.
Barry Silbert, chairman of Grayscale and DCG, celebrated the milestone on X. “The world’s first and only Zcash $ZEC fund is here,” he posted. He noted the launch arrived nine years after Grayscale first opened the trust.
The timing follows a friendlier regulatory backdrop. The SEC reportedly closed an investigation into the Zcash Foundation without action in January 2026. That outcome removed one overhang as the conversion moved forward.
Pricing on the old OTC trust was volatile too. Over several years, shares swung to large premiums and then steep discounts versus the underlying ZEC. The new mechanism aims to keep ZCSH near its net asset value, reported around $64.92 per share on 24 August.
Several details remain unsettled. The prospectus currently permits cash redemptions, while in-kind redemptions are not yet enabled. First-day volume and any premium or discount to NAV were still developing at publication.
Ownership concentration is another watch point. Coverage from The Block flagged non-binding discussions about a possible DCG-linked contribution of around 200,000 ZEC. That figure is unconfirmed, so treat it as a report rather than a commitment.
Regulatory durability is the deeper question. Critics point to the high fee, the privacy-coin scrutiny, and evolving AML rules in the US and EU. Supporters counter that selective disclosure and transparent custody set ZCSH apart from mandatory-privacy assets.
The launch gives ZEC its first regulated US wrapper, and flows will now test real demand. Watch the first-week volume, the tracking spread to NAV, and whether in-kind redemptions arrive later. Grayscale’s fee pledge also puts unusual marketing weight behind a single asset.
