Filecoin is preparing for one of its most significant upgrades since its mainnet launch. The Fast Finality (F3) upgrade, officially known as FIP0086, is scheduled to go live on the Filecoin mainnet in January 2025. This upgrade promises to improve transaction speeds, streamline cross-chain integrations, and simplify storage onboarding.

Key Features of Fast Finality

F3 introduces a dramatic reduction in transaction finality time, from 900 epochs (approximately 5 hours) to just two epochs (around 2 minutes). The upgrade is expected to bring several benefits:

• Near-instant transaction confirmations: Token holders and decentralized application (DApp) users will experience significantly faster transaction processing.

Development and Testing

The F3 upgrade has undergone nearly two years of research and rigorous testing. Initial trials on the Calibration network identified critical issues, which have since been resolved.
