@RippleXity Pontes means "bridges" in Latin and Portuguese, and it is also used as a financial or medical term depending on the context. This shouts $XRP to me...

@RippleXity Do we have confirmation if that’s public XRP ledger? or is that implemented on some for of “Private” ledger?

Christine Lagarde announced the date at the Eurogroup, calling Pontes a “digital euro made available for banks.” Yet no official ECB page names XRP, Ripple, or the XRP Ledger. So where does the XRPL story actually come from?
Pontes is the Eurosystem’s distributed ledger technology solution. In plain terms, it links market DLT platforms to TARGET Services so wholesale DLT trades settle in central bank money.
The ECB describes it directly. Pontes links market DLT platforms and TARGET Services to settle DLT-based wholesale transactions in central bank money. It is the short-term track of a dual programme, while Appia is the longer-term one.
Importantly, Pontes is not the retail digital euro. Instead, it is wholesale plumbing for banks and market venues. It combines three 2024 prototypes: the Bundesbank Trigger Solution, the Banque de France cash-token platform, and the Banca d’Italia TIPS Hash-Link.
Because of Hash-Link, settlement is atomic. That protocol comes from Banca d’Italia, not from any XRPL feature. The security moves only if the central bank money moves. As a result, the cash leg carries no commercial-bank credit risk.
The design builds on real testing. During 2024, the Eurosystem ran exploratory work with 64 participants and more than 50 trials. Those experiments settled roughly 1.6 billion euros in central bank money.
Timeline: The Eurosystem moved from DLT settlement experiments to Pontes, a production bridge connecting market DLT platforms with TARGET for central bank money settlement.
The EU’s DLT Pilot Regime creates a regulatory route for DLT-based trading and settlement systems.
The Eurosystem conducts 50+ experiments with 64 participants, settling about €1.6 billion in central bank money across multiple DLT models.
ECB research records Axiology using a private, permissioned infrastructure based on XRP Ledger code; public XRPL and XRP were not the settlement asset.
The ECB Governing Council approves Pontes as a short-term bridge between market DLT platforms and TARGET Services, alongside the longer-term Appia strategy.
The Eurosystem sets eligibility criteria for TARGET-accessible participants and supervised DLT market infrastructures.
The Eurosystem publishes the Appia roadmap, while Pontes remains the near-term operational track for tokenized wholesale settlement.
Clearstream, SWIAT, Cashlink and Axiology are named as the four day-one market DLT operators.
ECB President Christine Lagarde confirms that Pontes starts on 21 September for wholesale tokenized transactions in central bank money.
Pontes begins connecting eligible market DLT platforms to TARGET, enabling tokenized securities to settle against central bank money.
Planned enhancements target longer hours, faster finality, programmability and multi-currency support, while Appia targets a broader European tokenized-finance architecture.
The ECB named four initial market DLT operators in mid-August 2026. Together, they form the launch cohort for ECB Pontes.
The list includes Clearstream, part of Deutsche Börse, and SWIAT, a multi-bank DLT infrastructure. It also includes Cashlink, a German registrar, and Axiology, a Lithuanian trading and settlement system.
According to Ledger Insights, none of the launch documents mention the XRP Ledger. Meanwhile, professional coverage reports tight launch limits. The service runs euro only, from 09:00 to 16:00 CET, on business days. Operators also pay one-off fees of 15,000 euros each.
The XRPL connection runs through one operator, Axiology. Furthermore, it traces to a 2025 document, not to the 2026 launch spec.
In Annex II of the June 2025 exploratory-work report, the ECB recorded Axiology’s own description. The Axiology trading and settlement system is a private, permissioned infrastructure built using the open-source code of the XRP Ledger.
That same annex adds a key line. While Axiology benefits from XRP Ledger technology, it operates as an independent system. In other words, Axiology forked XRPL code for a closed securities ledger.
Notably, Axiology is not Ripple. Former Bank of Lithuania board member Marius Jurgilas founded the firm. It operates under the EU DLT Pilot Regime. Its own Pontes announcement does not mention XRP, XRPL, or Ripple.
The popular claim collapses two different things. Using XRPL open-source code in a private trials system is not the same as the ECB choosing public XRPL.
First, Axiology’s ledger is private and permissioned. Therefore, its transactions never touch the public XRPL mainnet. No Pontes contract, validator set, or transaction hash has appeared on any public XRPL explorer.
Second, the XRP token is not the settlement asset. The cash leg stays in euro central bank money through T2 and Eurosystem cash tokens. Consequently, XRP demand does not follow from this design.
Third, Pontes stays chain-agnostic on the asset side. For example, Cashlink used Polygon in 2024 trials, while Clearstream and SWIAT run different stacks. So one venue’s XRPL-derived code does not define the whole bridge.
XRP did tick higher around the announcement. On 18 September, the day Lagarde spoke, XRP climbed from about $1.30 toward $1.40, according to Trading Economics and MarketWatch snapshots.
By early 21 September, XRP traded near $1.44, up roughly 1.9% on one daily print. However, that move coincided with a broader crypto bounce, since Bitcoin and Ethereum also rose into launch day.
For that reason, analysts caution against a clean cause and effect. No study has isolated Pontes-driven flow, and XRP still sat well below its prior-year range. This article is not financial advice.
Monday marks the start, not the finish. The Eurosystem targets longer hours and, later, 24/7 multi-currency settlement around 2027 and mid-2028.
For now, watch two things closely. First, whether Axiology’s live connection still uses XRPL-derived code, which remains likely but unconfirmed for 2026. Second, whether any later operator cohort adds other XRPL-based venues.
The accurate takeaway is narrow but real. XRPL open-source code sits inside one licensed venue on ECB Pontes. Yet the bridge itself settles euros in central bank money, not XRP.
