Coinbase has officially launched its new Base App, an all-in-one platform that redefines how users interact with digital assets. Originally known as Coinbase Wallet, the revamped app now includes social features, payments, trading, and mini-apps, marking a significant step in the company’s broader strategy to make blockchain services more accessible.
The launch, which was announced during Coinbase’s “A New Day One” event, introduces a more comprehensive platform with three core components:
In beta as of July 16, the Base App aims to simplify blockchain interactions, turning the complex world of decentralized finance into an easy-to-use experience for users.
One of the most notable aspects of the Base App is its social feed, powered by the Farcaster protocol. This feature allows creators to tokenize their posts via Zora, earning directly from tips, sales, and weekly rewards for top engagement. Users can also track their friends’ trades and swap tokens instantly without leaving the feed.
Mini-apps embedded in the platform offer a wide range of services, from DeFi tools to prediction markets, giving users the ability to engage with various blockchain-based projects directly from the app.
Additionally, Base Pay introduces NFC-based USDC payments for easy transactions, with Shopify merchants able to use the service starting this week. users in the U.S. will also earn 1% cash back on these transactions later this year. However, Base Pay rewards are not available in the European Union or Canada.
The app integrates encrypted messaging via XMTP, allowing users to communicate securely and even transact with AI agents within the platform. Upon signing up, each user receives a Base Account, a smart wallet that works seamlessly across apps and chains.
The app’s “Sign in with Base” feature also simplifies the login process for developers, enabling easier integration into other platforms.
With the launch of Base, Coinbase is entering the competitive “super app” arena, joining the ranks of platforms like Meta, WeChat, and X that offer multiple services within a single ecosystem. This shift positions Coinbase as a key player in the digital finance and decentralized finance (DeFi) spaces, aiming to provide a bridge between traditional finance and the blockchain world.
Jesse Pollack, the creator of Base, made history by posting the first tokenized selfie on the platform, a symbolic gesture to mark the start of this new chapter for Coinbase.
Meanwhile, Binance Wallet X hinted at a possible competitor, posting on X, “Something big is coming up. Stay tuned!”
With a range of features designed to enhance the user experience, Base App is poised to drive further adoption of blockchain technologies. Coinbase’s gradual public rollout after the beta phase will likely expand its user base and increase engagement. Developers are encouraged to integrate “Sign in with Base” into their own products to further expand the ecosystem.
As the app gains traction, Coinbase aims to make on-chain activity as simple as using any other app, further integrating blockchain into everyday life.
