Chainlink CustodySync connects regulated custody with DeFi lending, allowing institutions to borrow while assets remain with Anchorage Digital.
Author: Kritika Gupta
26th October 2026- Chainlink introduced CustodySync, a system that lets institutions borrow in DeFi while their assets stay inside regulated custody. Anchorage Digital Bank is the launch partner and the first qualified custodian to adopt it.

Alright, so we got CCIP 2.0, Fulcrum, and now Chainlink CustodySync so institutions can make the most of their assets that are sitting idly with a custodian. And it’s launching with the most trusted custodian in the game - Anchorage. $LINK gives tokenized assets utility. https://t.co/zVaBW5Mtmi https://t.co/DGtL57dITB

Chainlink posted the news on X at 16:16 UTC, then linked the full announcement blog soon after. Anchorage confirmed the partnership within minutes. The pitch is direct. Institutions no longer have to choose between qualified custody and onchain liquidity.
Chainlink CustodySync keeps a custodian’s books in sync with onchain lending markets. The custodian’s system stays the source of truth for balances. Meanwhile, the loan itself runs on DeFi rails.
The product covers the full loan lifecycle. That means deposit, borrow, interest, repayment, and liquidation all stay aligned across both systems. Crucially, the underlying assets never leave regulated custody.
Instead of moving coins into a public pool, the custodian posts a transfer-restricted receipt token onchain. That token represents the custodied balance and serves as collateral. Because it is allow-listed, it cannot be freely traded or sent to arbitrary addresses.
Several Chainlink services do the syncing. The Chainlink Runtime Environment, or CRE, orchestrates the workflows between the custodian and the lending market. At the same time, Proof of Reserve publishes a verifiable onchain record of the custodied balance.
Pricing is the part that matters most for risk. Both sides read the same Chainlink data, so loan-to-value stays aligned. The protocol reads onchain Data Feeds, while the custodian reads Data Streams.
That shared pricing reduces a common failure mode. When two systems price collateral differently, one can trigger a liquidation too early or too late. Here, a single source keeps both views matched.
Borrowed funds move to the borrower in one transaction. Then repayments, interest, and activity write back to the custodian. In short, the DeFi market and the custody ledger track each other step by step.
Chainlink’s institutional adoption milestones
Chainlink introduces infrastructure for cross-chain messaging and asset transfers.
Collaborations explore tokenization and connectivity between traditional finance and blockchains.
The Automated Compliance Engine supports compliance workflows for institutional onchain activity.
Chainlink introduces CustodySync with Anchorage Digital, connecting regulated custody with DeFi lending.
Watch for additional custodians, confirmed lending-market integrations and verifiable onchain deployments.
Anchorage Digital Bank is the first federally chartered digital asset bank in the United States. It holds an OCC charter and operates as a qualified custodian. For institutions bound by custody mandates, that status is the whole point.
Anchorage runs the integration through its Atlas collateral management product. Atlas manages the off-chain collateral that backs the onchain loan in a tri-party style framework. So Anchorage, not a smart contract, handles margin and liquidation.
Nathan McCauley, Anchorage’s CEO and co-founder, framed the goal plainly. “Institutions should not have to choose between qualified custody and onchain liquidity,” he said in the Chainlink blog. He added that clients keep assets in regulated custody while Anchorage monitors loan health across the full lifecycle.
Traditional custody vs. the CustodySync model
The opportunity, by Chainlink’s own numbers, is large. DeFi lending markets hold more than $80 billion in deposits and more than $30 billion in active loans, according to the company. That liquidity sits mostly out of reach for regulated institutions today.
Custody scale dwarfs that figure. Chainlink cites roughly $700 billion in digital assets under custody. That is under 0.5% of the roughly $250 trillion in traditional assets under custody. In other words, most institutional capital still cannot touch DeFi yields.
LINK traded near $11.42 on announcement day, according to aggregated price pages. The move was minor, and no clear volume spike tied to the news in available data. The reaction, for now, looks muted.
Here is the key gap. The October 26 announcement named no specific DeFi lending protocol. Chainlink described general “DeFi lending markets” rather than a confirmed live integration.
One earlier signal points to Aave. On September 14, Aave Labs posted an ARFC governance proposal for an isolated Aave V4 Hub and Spoke using CustodySync for Anchorage-custodied Bitcoin. That proposal relies on a non-transferable receipt token and CRE workflows.
Still, that proposal remains at the governance stage. It is not confirmed as the first live market under this launch. So the question of where institutions can borrow today stays open.
Several details remain unconfirmed. Chainlink disclosed no contract addresses, no supported chains, no asset lists, and no fees. It also gave no committed capital or client adoption numbers at launch.
The design invites a fair critique too. Because the underlying assets never enter permissionless pools, and because the custodian runs liquidations, some may call this DeFi in name only. The model still leans on oracles and smart contracts as well.
Supporters counter that this is the point. Regulated institutions cannot use pure permissionless rails, so a tri-party bridge is the realistic path. Early reactions on X have skewed positive, with little named skepticism so far.
The next milestone to watch is the first named, live lending market. A confirmed Aave deployment, or another venue, would turn the framework into real loan volume. Asset support, chains, and fees should follow.
CustodySync also slots into a wider Chainlink institutional push. That stack already includes CRE, CCIP, Proof of Reserve, and the Fulcrum collateral gateway launched in September. Watch for more custodians beyond Anchorage to sign on.
For now, Chainlink CustodySync is a launch with one partner and a clear thesis. Whether institutional capital actually flows through it is the test ahead. This article is not financial advice, and readers should do their own research before acting on any token or protocol.
