7th August 2026- Chainlink has demonstrated synchronized settlement inside the Bank of England’s Synchronisation Lab. Its Chainlink Runtime Environment coordinated a settlement between central bank money and tokenized assets on public ledgers.

This pattern is called Delivery-versus-Payment, or DvP. Banks use it to remove settlement risk, the danger that one side pays while the other side fails to deliver. According to Chainlink, CRE handled that coordination across both a traditional payment system and an onchain environment.
The Chainlink Bank of England demonstration relied on three custom tools built on top of CRE. Each one covers a different job in the settlement flow.
First, a Chainlink Labs Synchronisation Operator interface lets an operator start transactions, build onchain instructions, and track status. Second, a CRE interface shows activity across the deployed CRE workflows. Third, a central bank interface lets the central bank confirm each transaction.
Together, these three screens let a single operator coordinate settlement across old and new rails. In short, the operator initiates, the workflows execute, and the central bank confirms. Chainlink says this is exactly what a future synchronisation operator would do.
The Chainlink Bank of England collaboration began earlier this year. On February 10, Chainlink confirmed its selection for the Lab as a decentralised solution provider. In total, the Bank picked 18 organisations, a group that reportedly includes Swift, LSEG, and Partior.
The Synchronisation Lab sits inside the Bank’s wider RTGS renewal, built around a new core service called RT2. Its goal is narrow but important. The Bank wants to test how central bank money could settle atomically against external systems, including tokenized assets on DLT.
Crucially, the Lab is non-live. It runs from spring 2026 for roughly six months, and it uses no real funds. As a result, participants can demonstrate use cases without touching production money. The work also builds on Project Meridian, an earlier experiment that proved the basic plumbing for synchronised settlement.

CRE went live in late 2025 as an orchestration layer for institutional workflows. Developers write a single workflow in Go or TypeScript, then compile it to WASM. That workflow can read and write onchain, call external systems, and run compliance checks in one place.
In this case, CRE pulled Chainlink’s existing pieces into one flow. Instead of stitching together separate services, the operator ran the settlement through a unified environment. Chainlink co-founder Sergey Nazarov has described CRE in broad terms. He calls it a way to connect blockchains, oracle networks, and payment systems in one application.
That framing is general, not specific to this pilot. Still, it explains why the Bank’s Lab is a natural fit. Synchronised settlement needs exactly that kind of bridge between old payment rails and public ledgers.
The excitement is real, but so are the limits. For now, the Chainlink Bank of England work remains a controlled test with no verifiable on-chain record.
Chainlink and the Bank published no transaction hashes, contract addresses, or block explorer links for this demo. Therefore, no one outside the Lab can independently verify the settlement onchain. It also stays unclear whether the asset leg used mainnet, a testnet, or a fully simulated ledger.
Just as important, no named Bank of England official has publicly praised or detailed the demonstration. The Bank describes the Lab in neutral terms, as a platform for industry to test ideas. So readers should treat this as a promising experiment, not a production launch. This article is not financial advice.
The market response stayed muted. LINK traded in a narrow band near $8.10 to $8.30 on August 6 and 7. No clear breakout followed the news.
Trading volume also held in the low hundreds of millions of dollars, according to daily data at the time. Meanwhile, no specific TVL or adoption metric on trackers like DefiLlama moved because of the update. In other words, traders treated the demo as incremental progress rather than a price catalyst.
On X, the LINK community reacted with clear enthusiasm. Supporters shared the video and debated whether CRE workflow fees could eventually feed Chainlink’s revenue. Skeptics, however, repeated the familiar caveat that a lab test is still just a lab test.
The next milestones will decide how much this matters. Watch for the Bank’s own evaluation of the Lab, which could shape the design of future RT2 synchronisation.
Beyond that, any path to a live synchronisation service would take years and further approval. For now, the Chainlink Bank of England demonstration stands as a signal of intent, backed by a working prototype. The real test will come if simulated sterling ever becomes the real thing.
