The upgrade, also known as Hibiscus, introduces single-signature cross-chain transfers and ZK-verified messaging. Both features target the long-standing criticism that sovereign rollups built on Celestia feel disconnected from each other.
“V8 went live on Mainnet yesterday, bringing single-signature cross-chain transfers and ZK-verified messaging to networks built on Celestia,” the Celestia team confirmed on X on May 6.
Celestia V8 ships two new protocol modules. The first is x/forwarding, defined in CIP-45. It enables single-signature cross-chain transfers through Hyperlane warp routes.
Previously, moving tokens between Celestia-based networks required multiple signatures or multi-step bridge transactions. Now, a user signs once on the source chain and sends tokens to a deterministically derived forwarding address. Permissionless relayers then complete the transfer to the destination chain.
This design is also compatible with centralized exchanges. No smart-contract interaction is required on the source side, which lowers the barrier for both users and infrastructure providers.
The second module is x/zkism, defined in CIP-46. It allows rollups to verify cross-chain messages using zero-knowledge proofs, specifically Groth16 proofs via the SP1 prover. This replaces the need for multisig committees or trusted validator sets to confirm messages between chains.
The upgrade activated automatically at block height 10,960,599 after sufficient validators signaled support through Celestia’s in-protocol MsgTryUpgrade mechanism. There was no separate governance proposal or standalone CIP vote.
On-chain data from Celenium and Mintscan confirms the activation block and stable post-upgrade chain state. Validators running celestia-app v8.0.3 reported smooth operations after the transition.
“Celestia V8 is now live on Mainnet at block 10960599. Simply put: this upgrade makes Celestia-built networks easier to connect,” validator BlockPro_ noted on X. Other validators, including Stakely and Chiter_inCosmos, confirmed stable node performance and congratulated the team.
Celestia’s core thesis separates data availability from execution and settlement. This allows rollups to remain sovereign while sharing a common DA layer. Celestia V8 Goes Live as the network’s most important interoperability-focused upgrade so far.
The x/forwarding module addresses this directly. By removing multi-signature requirements, it reduces friction for cross-chain transfers. Users and exchanges can move assets with a single signature, which matches the experience on monolithic chains.
The x/zkism module goes further. Zero-knowledge proofs offer cryptographic verification of cross-chain messages. Instead of trusting a committee of validators, rollups can rely on mathematical proof. This is a meaningful security improvement for high-value transfers between Celestia-based networks.
Together, these features position Celestia V8 as a direct response to competing DA layers like Avail, EigenDA, and NearDA, all of which have been shipping their own interoperability solutions.
Even after Celestia V8 Goes Live on mainnet, traders showed a relatively muted response. The token traded in the $0.36 to $0.37 range on May 5 and 6, with daily moves of 1% to 2.5%.
Earlier in April, anticipation around the V8 roadmap and testnet deployments drove weekly gains of 8% to 32%. Trading volume spiked over 400% during some of those sessions, according to CoinMarketCap data.
No significant TVL shifts appeared on Celestia-based rollups or ecosystem dashboards in the first 24 hours after activation. The muted market reaction suggests that much of the upgrade was already priced in during April’s rally.

The next milestone on Celestia’s roadmap is the shift to 3-second block times and 32 MiB blocks. These changes are part of the path toward Fibre, which targets 1 GB per second throughput. No specific date has been set for that upgrade.
Several unknowns remain. No specific rollups have announced plans to integrate the x/forwarding or x/zkism modules yet. Adoption announcements could come in the weeks ahead, but nothing is confirmed as of May 6.
Real-world performance benchmarks and latency data are also pending. While audits were completed before the release, live stress testing under production conditions will be the true test of these new primitives.
Broader skepticism around Celestia persists. Critics point to the gap between technical progress and actual developer or retail adoption. The “built the modular stack and nobody’s using it yet” narrative could intensify if rollup integration remains slow.
For now, Celestia V8 represents a clean technical milestone. The upgrade activated without incident, validators coordinated smoothly, and two meaningful interoperability features are live on mainnet. The next chapter depends on whether rollup teams build on top of them.
