@BitMartExchange Thank you BitMart for all of the memories. You will be missed.
Important Notice After a careful evaluation of the Company's operating conditions, market environment, and future strategic direction, BitMart has made the difficult decision to commence an orderly wind-down of its trading platform operations. We deeply regret having to make https://t.co/KX3zczIrAh
11:55 AM·Jul 26, 2026
The BitMart wind-down is phased, not a sudden freeze. Withdrawals stay open the whole time. Still, the exchange is urging users to pull their funds early.
BitMart framed the closure as a deliberate choice. In its official notice, the company cited “a careful evaluation of the Company’s operating conditions, market environment, and future strategic direction.” It gave no further reason.
The exchange also said it “deeply regret[s]” the decision. So far, founder Sheldon Xia has not commented publicly on the closure. BitMart launched in 2017 and grew to serve a reported 9 million-plus users across more than 180 countries.
The BitMart wind-down runs on three key dates, all in UTC. Mark them carefully, because each one removes a service.
On July 26 at 01:30, new registrations, deposits, and new orders stop. Futures accounts switch to Reduce-Only mode. Spot trading stops taking new orders. Automated tools like copy, grid, and API trading also phase out.
On August 26 at 01:00, all trading ends. After that, the platform may settle any remaining futures positions at the mark or index price.
On January 31, 2027 at 15:59, operations officially cease. Even then, users can log in for a short window to pull records and request withdrawals.
Key milestones in BitMart’s History & Wind-Down
Private key compromise on ETH and BSC drains ~$196M from BitMart’s hot wallets. Company pledges to cover all losses from its own funds.
FTC opens an investigation — noted as one of the first crypto-related probes — tied to the hack and operators.
BitMart pursues growth, launches the BMX token, and secures various licenses including an Australian AFSL noted in a 2026 Wikipedia update, while navigating ongoing competition and market cycles.
BitMEX (separate entity) announces its own wind-down — a concurrent event that adds context to the broader exchange consolidation period.
Nenter Chow is informed of his termination as Global CEO of BitMart.
BitMart officially announces it will wind down operations, marking the end of the exchange.
Withdrawals stay available through the BitMart wind-down. Even so, delays are possible, so acting early matters.
BitMart recommends closing positions before August 26 at 01:00 UTC. It also advises submitting withdrawals before 05:00 UTC that same day. Earlier is safer.
The exchange warns that extra compliance checks may apply. These include KYC, device and IP screening, address checks, source-of-funds review, and sanctions screening. As a result, some withdrawals could take longer to clear.
Users should update their KYC now if it is incomplete. Earn, staking, lending, and Launchpad products wind down on separate schedules, so check each product directly.
The market reacted fast. BMX, BitMart’s native token, fell about 59% in 24 hours after the announcement, according to CoinGecko. It traded near $0.0667 at the time of writing.
Over seven days, BMX is down roughly 79%. Its market cap sits near $22.6 million. Secondary outlets, including CoinDesk, reported drops between 55% and 60%.
Trading volume told its own story. CoinDesk cited about $1.6 billion in recent 24-hour volume on BitMart. That figure was likely inflated by users rushing to exit.
BitMart is not a new player. Sheldon Xia founded it in 2017, and it operated through Cayman Islands entities as it scaled. The exchange grew into a mid-tier venue with users in more than 180 countries.
Its record is mixed, though. In December 2021, hackers drained roughly $196 million from BitMart hot wallets on Ethereum and BNB Chain after a private key was compromised. The company said it would cover the losses from its own funds.
Reports later pointed to regulatory scrutiny tied to that breach. Since then, BitMart pushed its BMX token and pursued licenses in several markets. That history now shapes how users read the current wind-down.
The timing raised eyebrows. Former Global CEO Nenter Chow said BitMart ended his employment on July 24, two days before the announcement.
In a post on X, Chow said he had “no role in the management or decision-making of the company” after that date. He said no one consulted him on the wind-down, and he learned of it when it went public. BitMart has not publicly responded to his account.
Chow also urged users to rely only on BitMart’s official channels. The episode points to internal churn, though its link to the closure stays unclear.
On-chain evidence has not confirmed insolvency. Some users allege the exchange is short of funds, yet public data does not back that claim so far.
BitMart disclosed several hot wallets for transparency in late 2025. One ETH address labeled “BitMart 16” holds tens of millions of dollars in tokens across chains, per Etherscan. Its recent outflows look small and routine.
No large or unusual drains appeared right after the announcement. Still, no current proof-of-reserves data confirms 1:1 backing either. For now, the solvency question stays open.
The next month is the critical window. Trading ends August 26, so users have limited time to close positions and move assets.
BitMart’s exit follows the recent BitMEX wind-down and revives memories of past exchange failures. Even so, the company frames its process as orderly, with withdrawals kept open. Whether that holds through January 2027 is the real test.
Anyone still holding funds on BitMart should withdraw early and finish KYC without delay. This article is not financial advice. Always confirm the deadlines on BitMart’s official notice before you act.
