X (formerly Twitter) introduced cashtags around 2012, allowing users to add a dollar sign before ticker symbols such as $BTC or $TSLA to link to basic price data. In February 2026, Xβs head of product Nikita Bier announced Smart Cashtags, an upgraded version that adds live charts, expanded data, and trading links within the timeline.
How Xβs new Smart Cashtags upgrade transforms the in-app market experience
The Smart Cashtags feature was previewed in February 2026 by Nikita Bier, who described it as a step toward making X more useful for financial discussions. The current rollout on iOS in the US and Canada appears to be an initial phase before wider availability.
The move aligns with Elon Muskβs stated goal of building an βeverything app,β combining social media, payments, and financial tools within a single platform.
Key areas to watch include the rollout to Android and international markets, along with early user adoption data once available. Another important factor is whether X expands beyond charts and links into deeper trading functionality. The broader impact will depend on whether increased visibility translates into higher trading activity or measurable on-chain and brokerage volume.
