Breaking: Ascend and M1X Global have completed the first live institutional repo trade on Stellar. M1X Global and Ascend Markets financed USDM1 against Circle USDC onshore in the U.S., arranged through Peak Execution Services. 🏆 First institutional Repo trade in Stellar
01:22 PM·Oct 23, 2026
High attention and emotional sentiment detected.
Stellar announced the trade on 23 October 2026. According to the network, the deal ran as 72 automated hourly financing rolls over three days. Smart contracts handled the financing, repayment, and collateral release throughout.
Ascend Markets and M1X Global financed USDM1 onshore in the United States. According to Ascend CEO Dennis O’Connell, the trade settled between U.S. persons on a public network. His firm’s broker-dealer subsidiary, Peak Execution Services, arranged it. That subsidiary holds U.S. broker-dealer registration, which kept the deal inside existing regulatory rails.
The two firms pledged USDM1 as collateral and borrowed USDC against it. Then they repurchased the bond days later at a slightly higher price. That price gap represents the repo rate, which neither firm has disclosed.
So far, the parties have not published the notional size, the exact rate, or on-chain transaction hashes. As a result, the public cannot yet verify the 72 rolls on open explorers. O’Connell said more details will follow at Stellar’s Meridian 2026 keynote on 29 October.
USDM1 is a sovereign bond that the Republic of the Marshall Islands issues natively on-chain. Unlike a stablecoin, it carries sovereign credit and a legal claim on real assets. The issuer structured it under New York law, in the style of a fully collateralized Brady bond. In addition, the terms waive sovereign immunity and give holders dual recourse, both to the Marshall Islands and to the collateral itself.
Short-dated U.S. Treasuries back the bond one-to-one. Surus Trust Company holds those Treasuries in bankruptcy-remote custody as trustee and collateral agent. In addition, holders receive a perfected first-priority security interest under UCC Articles 8 and 9.
Because of that structure, institutions can treat USDM1 as high-quality collateral rather than a speculative token. According to DefiLlama, however, USDM1 remains small, with on-chain value near $1.3 million. That modest size sits in clear contrast to the “institutional” framing.
On-chain repo vs. traditional TradFi repo
A repo is a short-term secured loan. One party sells a security, then agrees to buy it back later at a higher price. Banks run this market every day to fund positions.
On Stellar, Soroban smart contracts automated each step of that cycle. Specifically, the contracts rolled the financing every hour for three days straight. Meanwhile, the collateral moved and settled without a manual back office.
This design let the trade run through a weekend, which traditional markets cannot do. In other words, secured financing operated 24/7 instead of pausing for settlement cutoffs. O’Connell called it the first “perpetual repo” on the network.
Stellar’s Path to Institutional Repo
Products from Franklin Templeton and WisdomTree establish institutional asset infrastructure on Stellar.
Compliant credit infrastructure and USDM1 sovereign digital bonds lay the groundwork for on-chain secured financing.
AscendFi and M1X Global announce Stellar’s first institutional repo, using USDM1 collateral with 72 automated hourly financing rolls.
Further details could clarify whether the transaction develops into a recurring financing facility.
The trade leaned on traditional legal documents, not just code. The firms executed a SIFMA Master Repurchase Agreement and Annex to govern the deal. Therefore the pledge carried the same enforceability that off-chain repo desks expect.
Chainlink Data Feeds priced the USDC leg during the transaction. For the securities leg, Stellar used the SEP-57 permissioned token standard, which mirrors ERC-3643 on Ethereum. Together, these tools linked on-chain automation with institutional compliance.
This is not the first on-chain repo to use USDM1. Back in August 2026, Virtu Financial, Tradeweb, and M1X Global ran a sovereign repo on the Canton network. That earlier trade settled atomically in under 10 minutes.
The Stellar deal claims a different set of firsts. Notably, it ran onshore between U.S. persons, on a public chain, and through Soroban contracts. By comparison, the Canton trade proved the collateral worked. The Stellar trade proved continuous financing could run on public rails.
The news moved markets very little. During the announcement, XLM traded near $0.177, with only modest 24-hour moves. Trading volume showed no clear surge tied to the news. According to DefiLlama, Stellar’s DeFi TVL sat around $231.5 million on the same day.
So the milestone reads as infrastructure progress rather than a price catalyst. Still, Ascend said more repo trades are already underway. Going forward, a recurring facility would matter more than this single pilot. This article is informational only and not financial advice.
Stellar has courted institutional real-world assets for years, hosting funds from Franklin Templeton and WisdomTree. The Stellar Development Foundation also backed Ascend with a $1 million investment in May 2026. This repo extends that strategy into secured financing.
The next signal arrives at Meridian 2026 in Lisbon, where Ascend plans to detail the trade. At roughly $1.3 million in total value, however, USDM1 still needs far deeper liquidity before the model scales. Until the firms publish size, rates, and on-chain proof, the market will watch closely. For now, the first Stellar institutional repo stands as a working demonstration, not a finished market.
