Spark SPK buybacks surpass 200 million tokens using over 4 million USDS, as protocol surplus funds purchases held in the treasury.

Steady attention without excessive speculation.
October 28, 2026 – Spark’s SPK buyback program has now topped 200 million tokens. The protocol spent more than 4 million USDS to reach that mark.
High Signal Summary For A Quick Glance
So the milestone caps a steady run of open-market purchases that began in early 2026. According to Spark’s public dashboard, the program had bought roughly 199.34 million SPK just before the announcement. That buying came at an average price near $0.0203. Recent fills were small, with single orders of about 1,000 USDS buying 52,000 to 55,000 SPK each.

The SPK buyback is a rules-based treasury policy, not a one-off event. It automatically directs a share of protocol surplus into open-market purchases of SPK.
Here the surplus means USDS held above a calculated target reserve. That target draws on three inputs: risk capital, a product backstop, and an operating runway. Spark earns the underlying USDS from SparkLend interest, the Spark Liquidity Layer, and savings products. As a result, only revenue above what the protocol needs to operate becomes eligible for buybacks.
On-chain parameters set the size of each purchase, and then it settles through time-weighted average price orders. These TWAP orders route mainly through CoW Swap. In other words, the protocol buys gradually in small pieces rather than in large single blocks. That approach limits price disruption on each fill.
Every fill lands on-chain, so anyone can verify it. The buyback Safe at 0x797B…2BF3 receives and holds the SPK. Its balance sits in public view on Etherscan.
The program built up in stages. First, on-chain activity began in March 2026 with about 1.84 million SPK.
Then the first full cycle ran in early April 2026. It bought roughly 26.66 million SPK for about 572,000 USDS. Across the first quarter, Spark spent close to $1 million in total.
The pace accelerated in the second quarter. Spark added another 58.3 million SPK for around $1.31 million, according to a Blockworks Advisory token holder report. By the end of that quarter, cumulative buybacks sat near 80.9 million SPK.
After a settlement backlog cleared in August, buying resumed at a faster clip. The program crossed 100 million SPK on August 19, 2026. Then it passed 150 million by September 7. Finally, it broke 200 million on October 28.
Spark’s SPK buyback program began with governance proposals in late 2025 and progressed to more than 200 million SPK repurchased using over 4 million USDS by October 28, 2026. Purchases are funded by protocol surplus, with acquired tokens held in the treasury rather than burned.
The SubDAO Proxy Management Plan defines a target reserve based on risk capital, product backstop, and operating runway. It directs 10% of excess USDS to open-market SPK buybacks, increasing to 100% of amounts above 200% of the target reserve.
Voting begins on the proposal establishing the rules-based framework for using surplus USDS to repurchase SPK tokens.
The parameter adjustment reduces the reserve runway from 24 to 12 months, lowers the product backstop from 5 million to 1 million USDS, and shortens the RRC lookback from 12 to 3 months. The standard buyback rate rises from 10% to 25% of monthly excess.
Approximately 570,000 USDS moves to a new multisig, followed by the acquisition of around 1.84 million SPK through small CoW Swap TWAP fills. On-chain analysts flag the initial activity.
Spark completes its first full monthly allocation, purchasing approximately 26.66 million SPK for around 572,000 USDS at an average price near $0.0215. This represented roughly 1% of circulating supply at the time.
Reported cumulative spending reaches approximately $986,000–$1.31 million as the program establishes its initial on-chain purchasing history.
Spark purchases approximately 58.3 million SPK for around $1.31 million during the quarter. By quarter-end, cumulative purchases reach about 80.9 million SPK for approximately $1.8 million, at an average price near $0.022. Acquired tokens remain in the treasury.
Purchases restart following a settlement backlog, with approximately $1.75 million in TWAP buybacks planned for the month. Spark reports that cumulative repurchases have surpassed 100 million SPK using more than $2.1 million in protocol revenue.
Spark reports more than 150 million SPK repurchased using over 3 million USDS, marking another major cumulative milestone for the program.
Spark confirms more than 200 million SPK repurchased using over 4 million USDS. The dashboard shows approximately 199.34 million SPK at an average price near $0.0203 around the milestone, with additional small purchases continuing on-chain.
The program continues to allocate surplus USDS according to governance parameters, with a standard rate of 25% of monthly excess and an enhanced 100% rate for amounts above 200% of the target reserve. Repurchased SPK remains in the SubDAO Proxy treasury rather than being burned. Live totals and individual fills can be tracked at data.spark.fi/financials.
The policy came from Sky governance in two steps. First, SAEP-06 authorized the framework in November 2025. It set the standard rate at 10% of monthly excess above a target near $35 million.
Then SAEP-09 adjusted the parameters in January 2026. It raised the standard rate to 25% and cut the operating runway from 24 months to 12.
In addition, SAEP-09 trimmed the product backstop from $5 million to $1 million USDS. It also shortened the risk lookback from 12 months to 3. Because these changes lowered the target reserve, more surplus became eligible for the SPK buyback. In short, Spark wanted more of its revenue flowing back to the token.
Spark does not destroy the purchased SPK. Instead, the tokens move to the treasury and stay there.
So the supply does not shrink permanently, which marks a clear break from burn-based tokenomics. Spark says the held tokens preserve flexibility for future incentives, governance, or other uses. That choice also keeps every option open for the community.
Co-founder Sam MacPherson framed the logic plainly on January 22, 2026. “It’s set to only buy back with funds above what’s needed to operate and grow the protocol,” he said. He added that a credible value accrual mechanism matters for the token.
He returned to that theme in October. The policy, he said, returns excess capital to SPK holders through a buyback. Notably, his earlier “Let’s burn!” post in August was rhetorical, since Spark holds the tokens rather than burning them.
The scale is meaningful but not dominant. For context, 200 million SPK equals roughly 2% of the 10 billion total supply. Against reported circulating supply, the share lands somewhere between 6% and 12%, depending on the methodology.
Still, the buybacks have not sparked a clear rally. SPK traded near $0.018 to $0.020 in late October. That price sits well below its July 2025 high around $0.185. Daily trading volume typically ran into the single-digit millions. Meanwhile, Spark’s total value locked held near $6.7 billion, according to DefiLlama, and its treasury stood near $50 million.
Analysts also caution that buybacks do not guarantee price appreciation. Softer revenue can shrink the surplus too. So future buyback sizes may fall if earnings stay compressed. For now, the program keeps running on parameters set by governance. Every purchase stays verifiable on the Spark data dashboard.
