Pudgy Penguins Unveils Pengu Visa Card with Up to 12% Rewards

Background and Context

Pudgy Penguins began as an 8,888-piece Ethereum NFT collection launched in July 2021. While the project initially went viral, it later experienced a prolonged downturn commonly referred to as the “great blizzard.” In 2022, entrepreneur Luca Netz acquired the project for 750 ETH, initiating a strategic turnaround.

Following the acquisition, the team repositioned Pudgy Penguins as a consumer-facing brand. Under Netz’s leadership, the project expanded into physical toys sold through major retailers, mobile games, and licensed products. 

Crypto-linked Visa and Mastercard cards already exist, including offerings from Crypto.com, early Binance cards, and past initiatives such as BlockFi’s rewards card. However, NFT-native brands have adopted payment cards far less frequently. As a result, this marks Pudgy Penguins’ first branded card and a notable milestone for NFT-driven ecosystems.

Historically, Pudgy Penguins announcements have generated strong short-term enthusiasm followed by volatility. The $PENGU token launch in late 2024 opened with heavy trading volume and a multibillion-dollar market capitalization, briefly lifting NFT floor prices before broader market corrections followed.

The Pengu Card supports deposits in cash, USDC, USDT, and other cryptocurrencies, enabling spending across 170+ countries and 18 or more currencies. Users can also earn yield on balances held within the KAST app.

Cashback rewards depend on the card tier. The Standard card offers 6 percent cashback, the Premium or Black tier provides 8 percent, and the Luxe or Gold tier delivers up to 12 percent. Pudgy Penguins will launch a virtual card first, with physical cards scheduled for a later release.

To join, users must create and verify a KAST account, including completing KYC, and then sign up for the official waitlist. Every participant receives access to a free Standard card and a referral code. In addition, a referral leaderboard rewards the top 10 referrers with a free Premium card.

Implications for the Pudgy Penguins Ecosystem

The Pengu Card could significantly improve $PENGU’s real-world utility by making the token directly spendable in everyday transactions. As a result, the initiative may support stronger holder retention and incremental demand if adoption expands beyond existing NFT collectors.
