14 April, 2026: A criminal group is extorting Kraken after obtaining internal videos with client-sensitive data from its customer support systems. The exchange’s Chief Security Officer Nick Percoco publicly disclosed the threat, revealing that the criminals are demanding ransom to prevent the release of the footage. Kraken has refused to pay the ransom and confirmed that the incident impacted roughly 2,000 accounts (0.02% of its user base), with no customer funds or core systems compromised.
The public disclosure is unusual, as exchanges typically handle extortion attempts privately. Kraken’s decision to go public signals a more transparent approach and highlights ongoing insider-related security risks in centralized platforms.

@c7five Kraken just proved why self-custody is king: insiders gonna insider regardless of zip code or passport. Blame 'third world' support staff all you want, the truth is that in 2026 a support rep can still pull up 2,000 client records like it's 2012. Greed is global, controls

@c7five @krakenfx So basically you outsourced it to shady third party companies (or even worse your internal recruiters are sleeping) and you got hacked twice or more. You made your customers vulnerable to wrench attacks. This is like red carpet for lawsuit

@c7five @krakenfx First crypto company to not hire Indians for their support systems will get my money. Literally have had 3 data leaks I know of from internal systems being managed by Indians.

Kraken discovered two separate insider incidents involving its customer support staff. In February 2025, the exchange received a tip that a support employee had recorded and leaked a video showing internal systems with limited client data (names, addresses, and account details) circulating on criminal forums, according to Percoco. A second similar incident occurred more recently in early 2026, where another insider accessed and recorded comparable client information.
A criminal group later obtained these internal videos, which began extorting Kraken by threatening to release the footage to media outlets and social media unless the exchange paid a ransom. On April 13, 2026, Kraken’s Chief Security Officer Nick Percoco publicly disclosed the ongoing extortion attempt, confirming that the company has refused to pay and is coordinating with law enforcement.
Timeline: The Kraken insider incidents leading to the public extortion disclosure
A Kraken customer support employee secretly recorded an internal video showing limited client-sensitive data that later leaked.
A second support staff member accessed and recorded similar client information from internal systems.
A criminal group obtained both videos and began threatening Kraken with public release unless a ransom was paid.
Kraken’s Chief Security Officer Nick Percoco publicly revealed the ongoing extortion attempt; the exchange refused to pay and is coordinating with law enforcement.
Kraken chose to publicly disclose the extortion attempt proactively rather than waiting for the criminals to leak the videos. Chief Security Officer Nick Percoco stated that the company made this decision to maintain transparency with users and to avoid giving the attackers leverage through surprise releases. The two insider incidents occurred more than a year apart (February 2025 and early 2026), showing that the same criminal group had been sitting on the material for more than a year before making their ransom demand. Kraken has now launched an internal investigation into its customer support processes and is accelerating rollout of enhanced monitoring tools to prevent similar leaks in the future.
“We will not pay a ransom,” Kraken Chief Security Officer Nick Percoco said, adding that the company is working with law enforcement.
