@Cardano_CF @ICANN Cardano's .ada application is a Governance Action come to life, and it's about to rewrite the global internet address system's code.
Our .ada application is advancing to the next phase of the @ICANN Generic Top-Level Domain (gTLD) Program. If approved, the .ada domain would bring Cardano into the global internet address system, same as .com or .org. The application follows a Governance Action passed with https://t.co/9rqUZCYhnO

@Cardano_CF @ICANN Love seeing Cardano expand beyond the blockchain itself, big step forward 👏

High attention and emotional sentiment detected.
The news followed ICANN’s Reveal Day on 7 October, when the body published the list of paid applications moving forward. Importantly, this is publication of a submitted, fee-paid application. It is not an approval, and it is not a promise that .ada will ever go live.
On 7 October 2026 at 18:00 UTC, ICANN released its Reveal Day snapshot. The agency reported 1,615 active applications in the 2026 Round. Source: the ICANN Reveal Day announcement.
Reveal Day simply discloses applicant names, applied-for strings, replacement strings, preliminary contention sets, and public application data. In other words, it shows what people asked for. It does not grant anything.
The next morning, at 06:54 UTC, the Foundation posted the news on X. It also published a company blog by Laura Mattiucci. According to that post, the .ada application is now moving ahead.
A third-party copy of the ICANN export lists the .ada string under applicant “Cardano Stiftung Community.” That is the Swiss foundation’s legal name, and .cardano appears as the replacement string. Readers can confirm the record on ICANN’s Application Publication and Statistics system.
Cardano’s .ada application has entered the post-Reveal Day phase of ICANN’s 2026 new gTLD round and is advancing through evaluation toward a potential delegation.
The Cardano Foundation begins scoping bids for .ada and .cardano following ICANN’s plans for a new gTLD application window.
The Foundation publishes its plan and submits the “Securing Generic Top-Level Domains for the Cardano Ecosystem” Info Action.
The Info Action expires after recording roughly 71.29% Yes stake in the Cardanoscan voting record.
The Foundation says the governance action passed with 74.5% approval and confirms it will prepare the ICANN applications.
ICANN opens and closes the 2026 New gTLD application window. The exact submission time for Cardano’s .ada application is not public.
Applicants pay the USD 227,000 evaluation fee required for applications to proceed in the 2026 round.
ICANN confirms that 1,616 of 1,663 submitted applications have paid and will proceed.
ICANN publishes the application details, identifying Cardano Stiftung Community as the applicant for .ada, with .cardano listed as the replacement string.
The Cardano Foundation announces that the .ada application is advancing after Reveal Day. The application is eligible for evaluation, but this is not an approval or delegation.
Eligible applicants can switch to an alternate string. Cardano’s listed alternate is .cardano.
ICANN publishes the final string list and updated contention sets, opening the Community Input and Objections Period.
Applications enter the community input, GAC warning and formal objection period, with a 65% evaluation-fee refund window through 27 November 2026.
ICANN is expected to conduct prioritization, string and applicant evaluations, followed by contention resolution where required.
The Foundation’s stated window for delegation is 2028–2030 if the application clears evaluation, objections, contracting and pre-delegation testing. This is not an ICANN guarantee.
The phrase sounds decisive, but the process is just beginning. Published applications are requests, not approvals. ICANN itself frames them that way.
From here, each application can still switch to its replacement string. The Replacement Period runs until 21 October 2026. After that comes String Confirmation Day on 17 November 2026.
Then applicants face community input, objections, and formal evaluation of technical, financial, and operational readiness. If two parties want the same string, the process can head to contention resolution and even an auction. Private deals to settle contention are not allowed this round.
So “advancing” means the Cardano .ada domain bid cleared payment and administrative checks and appeared on the public list. Nothing more has been decided yet.
The filing traces back to a Cardano governance action from October 2025. The Foundation submitted an on-chain Info Action titled “Securing Generic Top-Level Domains for the Cardano Ecosystem.”
An Info Action is a non-binding community signal. Notably, it spends no treasury funds and changes no protocol rules. It simply records sentiment on-chain.
The Foundation says the action passed with about 75% support. On-chain data tells a slightly softer story. According to Cardanoscan, DReps voted 71.29% yes among yes and no stake, with 3.99 billion ADA in favor. The gap reflects a difference in reporting method, not a second vote.
Crucially, the Foundation says it funds the Cardano .ada domain application itself. As a result, no community treasury money is at stake.
ICANN charges a steep fee to apply. Each gTLD evaluation costs USD 227,000, per ICANN’s fee FAQ.
Back in October 2025, the Foundation estimated roughly $700,000 one-time for two applications. That figure covered ICANN fees plus support costs. It also projected about $350,000 in annual fixed costs. Source: the Cardano Forum proposal.
Those figures matter because the Foundation operates as a Swiss not-for-profit. Therefore it carries the cost rather than drawing on ecosystem funds.
The announcement landed during a broad market pullback. No located source ties any ADA price move to the 8 October post.
A CoinMarketCap AI note dated 8 October put ADA down 4.33% to about $0.256 over 24 hours. The drop tracked Bitcoin weakness and a wider sell-off, not the domain news.
Social reaction stayed small and mostly supportive. The source tweet drew roughly 129 likes and about 6,800 views shortly after posting. That engagement is far too light to move a market.
None of this is financial advice. Readers should treat ADA price commentary as context, not a recommendation.
The near-term calendar is clear. The Replacement Period closes on 21 October. String Confirmation Day then arrives on 17 November. Objections and evaluation follow into 2027.
The Foundation expects delegation, if it happens at all, sometime in 2028 to 2030. Independent domain watchers have floated earlier windows for simple, uncontested strings, but that is not an ICANN commitment.
For now, the Cardano .ada domain is a paid, published request working through a long pipeline. The Foundation frames it as a bridge from Web2 to Web3. The DNS industry frames it as one of 1,615 bids still facing years of review. Both readings can be true, and the APS record remains the place to watch.
