B402 implements the x402 protocol, which revives HTTP status code 402 (“Payment Required”) for web-native payments. When a buyer requests a paid resource, the server responds with a 402 status and an X-PAYMENT-REQUIREMENTS header. That header specifies the token, amount, and recipient wallet.
The buyer then signs an EIP-712 message off-chain. No on-chain transaction or gas fee is needed from the buyer’s side. B402 verifies that signature server-side and sponsors the gas to submit a direct peer-to-peer token transfer on-chain from buyer to seller.
In short, Binance x402 turns a standard HTTP request into a settled stablecoin payment. The process works for both human users and autonomous AI agents.
Coinbase published the original x402 whitepaper and protocol in May 2025. That version targeted AI-agent micropayments with stablecoins on Base. Since then, several third-party facilitators launched x402 implementations on BNB Chain, including AEON, Pieverse, and Vistara Labs.
Binance’s B402 is different because it is the exchange’s first direct, branded facilitator service. It integrates with the broader Binance ecosystem, including Binance Pay and Trust Wallet for self-custody. It also sponsors gas fees, so buyers never pay transaction costs directly.
Binance x402 vs. Coinbase x402 vs. other agent-payment protocols
The core use case for Binance x402 is autonomous commerce. AI agents increasingly need to pay for API calls, compute resources, data feeds, and other services without human intervention. Traditional payment rails require accounts, API keys, and subscriptions. Those steps create friction that slows down agent-to-agent interactions.
With x402, an AI agent can sign a payment authorization programmatically and attach it to a standard HTTP request. The server verifies payment and delivers the resource instantly. This enables pay-per-call and usage-based billing models that fit how agents actually consume services.
Binance positions B402 as the infrastructure layer for this emerging market. The exchange already processes billions in daily trading volume, and its brand recognition could help accelerate developer adoption on BNB Chain.
B402 is not a smart contract deployed on-chain. Instead, it operates as an off-chain API service. The buyer signs an EIP-712 typed data message, which acts as a spending authorization. B402 then verifies the signature off-chain and submits an on-chain token transfer using EIP-3009 (transferWithAuthorization) or Permit2.
Because B402 sponsors the gas, the entire process is gasless for the buyer. The seller receives tokens directly in their wallet. No intermediary holds funds at any point.
For developers, the quick start guide shows how to integrate B402 into existing HTTP APIs. Merchants can add payment requirements to any endpoint using standard HTTP headers.

No executive statements from CEO Richard Teng or founder CZ accompanied the announcement. BNB traded in the $637 to $642 range around the time of the tweet, according to CoinMarketCap data. No immediate price spike was attributable to the news.
Binance has confirmed plans to expand B402 to other EVM-compatible networks, but timelines and specific chains have not been announced.
