Lukas Schor is a co-founder of Safe, a blockchain infrastructure platform focused on smart accounts and secure digital asset management. Safe, originally known as Gnosis Safe, provides smart contract-based accounts that allow individuals, DAOs, businesses, and institutions to manage digital assets with programmable controls.
Schor has played a central role in developing Safe from an internal Gnosis project into an independent ecosystem. He currently serves as President of the Safe Ecosystem Foundation, where he focuses on ecosystem growth, operations, and the broader development of Safe’s smart account infrastructure.
Early Background and Career
Lukas Schor studied economics at the University of St. Gallen in Switzerland. Before entering crypto, he gained experience in product management and technology, including a role as a global product platform manager at Bosch Switzerland. He also worked with the startup platform Jodel and Berlin’s Tech Open Air.
Schor became increasingly interested in cryptocurrency around 2016 and later worked as a marketing manager at The Argon Group, a cryptocurrency-focused investment bank. In 2019, he joined Gnosis as a product manager and became responsible for the Gnosis Safe project.
His work at Gnosis eventually became the foundation for what would become Safe, giving Schor experience across product development, Ethereum infrastructure, and digital asset custody.
How Lukas Schor Created Safe
Lukas Schor joined Gnosis in 2019 when Gnosis Safe was still an early-stage project. He worked alongside Richard Meissner and other members of the team to develop the product into infrastructure for securely managing digital assets.
Gnosis Safe initially focused on providing teams with smart contract-based accounts and multisignature security. The technology allowed multiple authorized parties to participate in transaction approvals instead of relying on a single private key.
As adoption increased, Gnosis Safe became increasingly important to DAOs, organizations, exchanges, and other crypto users. In 2022, the project spun out of Gnosis and became an independent ecosystem under the Safe name, with Schor becoming one of its co-founders and President of the Safe Ecosystem Foundation.
How Safe Works
Safe is a smart account platform that uses smart contracts to give users more control over how digital assets are managed. Instead of relying only on a traditional externally owned account controlled by a single private key, Safe accounts can use multiple owners, approval requirements, spending rules, and programmable transaction logic.
This architecture allows DAOs, companies, institutions, and individual users to manage assets through configurable security and authorization mechanisms. Safe has also expanded beyond multisignature wallets toward a broader smart account infrastructure that developers can integrate into decentralized applications.
The SAFE token is the native governance token of the Safe ecosystem. It allows token holders to participate in SafeDAO governance and contribute to decisions concerning the development and direction of the ecosystem.
Lukas Schor’s Role at Safe
As a co-founder and President of the Safe Ecosystem Foundation, Lukas Schor has played a central role in Safe’s strategic development and ecosystem growth. The foundation identifies his expertise as including ecosystem growth and operations.
Schor has also been involved in expanding Safe beyond its original wallet functionality. Under his leadership and through the broader Safe ecosystem, the platform has developed toward smart accounts, programmable digital ownership, developer infrastructure, and institutional self-custody.
In 2025, Safe established Safe Labs, a commercial subsidiary focused on enterprise-grade self-custody infrastructure. Schor remained involved as co-founder of Safe and President of the Safe Ecosystem Foundation while Rahul Rumalla became CEO of Safe Labs.
Why Lukas Schor Matters in Crypto
Lukas Schor is associated with the development of smart account infrastructure and the evolution of blockchain-based digital asset custody.
Safe has grown from a Gnosis project into an independent ecosystem used by DAOs, businesses, institutions, and individual users. Its smart contract architecture provides an alternative to simple single-key wallets by allowing programmable ownership and transaction authorization.
Schor’s work reflects the broader development of account abstraction and smart accounts in Web3, where blockchain accounts can become more programmable and easier to integrate into applications and financial systems.
