Asset manager Volatility Shares has filed for three new ETFs that aim to gain exposure to Solana (SOL) futures contracts. These contracts would be traded on Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC)-regulated exchanges. However, no such futures products currently exist in the market.
The fund’s prospectus states it will invest in contracts “that trade only on an exchange registered with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission.” Despite this stipulation, neither a Solana futures product nor a spot Solana ETF is available today.
Industry Experts React to the Filing
Bloomberg ETF analyst Eric Balchunas called the filing “wild” in a post on X (formerly Twitter). Balchunas added, “This is a good sign Solana futures are on the way, which arguably bodes well for spot ETF approval odds.”
Nate Geraci, president of the ETF Store, speculated that the filing hints at the CFTC gaining an upper hand over the SEC in their ongoing struggle to regulate digital assets. “The CFTC may be winning [its] power struggle [with the] SEC over digital asset regulation,” Geraci wrote.
Solana’s Rising Potential in ETFs
Crypto industry experts have begun discussing which digital asset could secure the next spot ETF approval. While some point to Solana as a strong candidate, others believe assets like XRP could take the lead.
Volatility Shares has a history of breaking ground in the crypto ETF space. The firm launched the first leveraged Bitcoin futures ETF in June 2023 and followed with a 2x Ether ETF a year later. Its success spurred other asset managers to introduce leveraged crypto funds.
Institutional Interest Grows
The filing aligns with a surge in digital asset enthusiasm among traditional institutional traders. Recently announced funds reflect a growing appetite for cryptocurrencies as major players explore opportunities in the evolving market.
Though the Solana futures ETFs remain speculative, the filing suggests increased optimism for broader cryptocurrency ETF approvals. If approved, these ETFs could mark another step toward institutional adoption of digital assets.
